Civicorps Schools

Description

Civicorps Schools is a comprehensive, nonprofit educational organization located in Oakland, California. Its mission is to promote youth development through environmental stewardship and community service and to further education reform and social change. Through service-learning—the practice of linking academic learning with service that meets real community needs—Civicorps engages young people from all walks of life in their education and development while addressing environmental and social issues. For nearly two decades, Civicorps program models have enhanced participants’ academic, leadership, employment and life skills, self-esteem, civic responsibility and environmental awareness.

Civicorps fulfills its mission through a number of diverse programs which, while using a variety of models to target different age groups, all focus on youth development and education through service-learning and civic engagement. Civicorps programs serve nearly 3,000 East Bay children and youth, ages 5-24. Civicorps flagship program, the Corpsmember Program, offers youth ages 17 to 24 a meaningful education through service-learning programs that focus on environmental stewardship and community service. Through a combination of on-the-job training in environmental improvement projects and formal classroom instruction, students develop their potential in five interconnected areas: academics, citizenship, communication, employability, and life skills. The Corpsmember Program High School Level of the Civicorps Charter School, based on our founding conservation corps program, opened in 1996 to support Corpsmembers in earning their high school diplomas or GEDs. Other EBCC programs include Project YES (Youth Engaged in Service), which provides school-based teacher training and classroom, after school, weekend, and summer service learning programming for nearly 1,300 students annually in partnership with Oakland elementary, middle and alternative schools. Civicorps also hosts one of the largest AmeriCorps programs in the nation. Our AmeriCorps Literacy Initiative provides one on one literacy tutoring in-class and after school to more than 1,300 students from Oakland’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods and builds school based gardens for hands on learning in health, nutrition, science and math. Civicorps newest initiatives, the Institute for Citizenship Education and Teacher Preparation and the Elementary Level of the Civicorps Charter School (serving grades K-5), work in partnership to develop replicable models and resources for fostering civic literacy among elementary-age youth.

1983 – Founding Executive Director Joanna Lennon established the oldest and largest regional urban corps in California, giving young adults a chance to learn employability, life and citizenship skills through environmental service projects while furthering their academic education.
