Description
- Excerpted from http://www.dpwfoundation.org/about.htm
Established in 1988, The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation is the major philanthropic organization for the Washington Companies and the Washington family. A portion of the profits of the Washington Companies is the source of the Foundation's endowment, currently in excess of $17 million.
The Foundation is one expression of the Washington commitment to corporate responsibility, but the Washingtons are also active personally in charitable work, contributing additional donations of time and funds in areas of their personal interests. The personal involvement of Dennis and Phyllis Washington augments the Foundation’s reach and continues to drive its philanthropy.
Mission
The Foundation's mission is to better the human condition by supporting programs and services that give people the tools to enhance the quality of their lives and, ultimately, to benefit society as a whole.
The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation has supported a broad spectrum of worthy causes benefiting people of all ages. Since 1988, it has funded programs for those with special needs, summer camps for cancer-stricken or troubled children and ensured access to theater, arts and music programs by economically disadvantaged youth and their families. It has granted wishes for terminally-ill children, awards for science and math fair winners, and funded programs to purchase clothing, school supplies and toys for needy children. The Foundation also has supported rescue missions, food banks, shelters for victims of domestic violence and free mammogram exams for low-income women. Since its inception, the Foundation and the Washingtons contributions total more than $38 million.
