I was eight years old when I decided to put a penny in the socket of my desk lamp to see what would happen. And what happened was this-- the circuitry in the house gave an almighty shudder. At the same time a white-hot 15 amp spark blasted from the light switch.
I could have been in a world of hurt if I had kept my hand on the light switch. As it was, my father was raging mad that I managed to trip all the breakers in the house. This was, after all Game One of Super Bowl Sunday. A bad day to shut the power down. But also a good day because my father, in a hurry to get back to the opening kickoff, forgot to punish me. He did write a letter to the editor of the newspaper that ran the Archie & Jughead strip where I got the idea in the first place.
