A funny thing happened to Bob Gammon, industrial engineer and inventor of the Down-The-Line putting system when he turned 40. Like Sam Snead, he developed an incurable case of the yips. Until then, putting was the strongest part of his game. Gammon says, "On the putting green I could still putt with anyone, but bring out the scorecard and I became a big mass of Jell-O. For years I struggled and tried every putter and method available. I had the same results, great on the practice green and terrible when I played."
In 1998, Gammon decided to use his strengths in process improvement, developed over 25 years as an industrial engineer, to help improve his putting. So one day he went to a putting green and asked, "What is the simplest, most natural way to roll a ball to the hole without using a putter." He faced the hole and rolled the ball towards the hole in a bowling motion, his dominant arm moving along side his body. He spent the next several years developing a method that closely resembled that bowling motion and a putter to support that kind of movement.
