Now that I have the (computational) resources, I installed mod_security 1.9. It’s a product which examines HTTP requests for malicious payload.

So far I’ve installed the comprehensive rules used at Got Root, which I found to be largely useful in protecting common web application vulnerabilities. After a dry run for a few days, they have not yielded any false positives.

I’ve also added a rule of my own to block suspected blog spam, which basically rejects blogs with A HREF tags in the relevant fields. It has the potential to catch many false positives, but in my dry run, the only ones I’ve seen thus far are spam. The motivation probably is PageRank - which I’m starving them of since this rule disallows links of any sort in the comments. I suppose people who post legitimate URLs have to live with them not appearing as clickable links.
