The Dorset Coast Forum - Dorset Coast
Description
In 1993 the Dorset County Council recognised that there were a number of issues concerning the coast that were not being addressed properly and created the post of Coastal Policy Officer. In 1994 'The Dorset Coast Today' and 'The Future of the Dorset Coast' were published advocating the creation of a coastal forum. In the autumn of 1994 a coastal seminar held, with representatives from a wide range of organisations all of whom had an interest in the coast. At the meeting there was agreement to form a forum. In 1995 the Dorset Coast Forum was established with the aims of:
The Dorset Coast Forum consists of a partnership of key funding organisations, including the Dorset County Council which acts as the Forum's host and underwriter, a membership that represents all interests as equals and an independent chairman. It has no agenda to take on statutory functions, but it can help with co-ordination of coastal policy or management. It works by generating ideas, co-ordinating discussion and encouraging friendly relations and providing good networking. Empowerment is by consensus, peer review and willingness to commit to jointly agreed action.
In 1999 the Dorset Coast Strategy was published. Developed by the Dorset Coast Forum, it sets out a future for the coast, covering the coastline and inshore seas from Lyme Regis to Highcliffe, Christchurch.
