But we can also tell you a little about ourselves, which is always nice. Newport started, it could be argued, in 1855, when the first settlers came and discovered oysters. The word soon got out. Officially, though, Newport was founded on July 4, 1866 and not long after became a popular travel destination. Pretty amazing, considering we didn't even have a road to get here until 1927.
Newport steadily grew into what it is today — a thriving fishing harbor, commercial center and tourist destination. But enough about us. You need to come and visit.
