Disability First Stop | Home | The First Stop for West Australians with disabilities and their families
Description
Disability First Stop is an innovative new service designed to assist people to get the help they need, when they need it, particularly in that difficult time after initial diagnosis. This new one-stop information and support service will help newly diagnosed people and their families cut through the disability service maze.
In launching the service Ms McHale emphasized that concentrated initial support, following diagnosis of a condition likely to lead to some disability, is crucial. Each year about 8,500 children and adults are diagnosed with a disability as a result of prenatal events, illness or accidents.
"Shock and stress is common with diagnosis and this new service will help newly diagnosed people and their families by offering a first point of contact, eliminating the sometimes frustrating need to seek assistance through a range of different agencies", Ms McHale said.
