Description

More than you ever wanted to know about this wiki

In the summer of 2005 I needed to put together a paper on digitizing audio and video for my library: what our needs were, what formats we might use for digitizing and storing multimedia, and what we might need in the future. Gathering this information was more difficult than it should have been. Wikipedia was great for definitions, but real-world information relevant to information organizations was surprisingly tough to locate.

At the same time, I had just written an article on usability for the MyLibrary manual. Looking over the usability section of this manual, I realized that I could add value to some of the articles there, and that others might be able to add value to my article, if the manual were collaborative. I had an epiphany: "Eureka!" I thought, "If there were a wiki for digitization, my problems -- and no doubt the problems of many others -- would be solved."

So I contacted the only person I knew who had created a wiki at that point, Meredith Farkas. Meredith is the administrator of Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki, as well as the creator of the ALA Chicago Wiki, perhaps the most ingenious and USEFUL use of wikis I've come across. She patiently answered all my questions, and two weeks later Digiwik was born.
