Digital Phase Processing
Description
Excerpted from the website:
- Phase-locked loops (PLLs) are widely used for clock recovery, synchronization, phase filtering, frequency multiplication, phase modulation, and phase demodulation. Recent technology has made possible digital PLLs in which numbers, rather than analog voltages, represent phase. In fact, if the circuit is entirely digital, the function of a PLL can be performed without a feedback loop; therefore we use the more general term “digital phase processing” to describe the technology. The digital nature provides greater accuracy and allows more flexible processing. The dynamic range can be billions of times the resolution, phase processing with milli-Hertz bandwidths is possible, phase processing all the way out to the carrier rate or data rate is possible, and nonlinear and time-varying processing are easy. Digital phase processing comprises four types of circuits: digital phase processors, digital PLLs, digital phase measurement, and digital phase generation.
