- The company was formed in February 2000 as a spin-off company from the University of Brighton. During the previous ten years the staff of Design Specific were responsible for the running and technical output of the industrial consultancy unit based in the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The work of the unit ranged from the design and manufacturing special purpose machinery, to the production of rapid prototyping of models. The Design Specific staff was involved in over thirty consultancy projects for the construction, vacuum pumps, gas authorities, water authorities and major stress analysis for the likes of Siemens. It is this background of consistent high quality analytical and creative design work that has been fed into the products of Design Specific and has made the company the major innovator in the disability sector.
