Title
DHPD - Denver Health Paramedic Division
Description
DHPD is a division of the Denver Health and Hospital Authority, and is the sole provider of 911 EMS for the City and County of Denver, Colorado. Our system has a peak staffing of 14 dual Paramedic Ambulances that are dynamically dispersed throughout the City and County, responding to over 64,000 calls per year. Approximately 50% of these returns come back to Denver Health Medical Center (formerly Denver General Hospital), which is our base hospital. The remaining transports go to a system of 12 other "911 participating" hospitals in the Denver metro area.
Variety is an added benefit to the EMS experience at Denver Health. Our paramedics staff 24 hours per day at Denver International Airport, provide special event coverage at nearly all of the professional sports venues in Denver - as well as at large events such as rock concerts and the Pope's visit for World Youth day in 1993, teach in the EMS Education Department, and work in Communications. This is in addition to providing pre-hospital care in truly one of the best EMS systems in the country. The DHPD bicycle team (A.T.M.U.) is very active in providing EMS coverage for city sporting and special events.
There are approximately 170 employees of the Paramedic Division. This figure includes paramedics, dispatchers, supervisory and secretarial staffs, educators and critical care transport nurses. Paramedics typically work four 10-hour shifts per week, averaging 7-8 calls per shift.
