Description

The Delaware Native Plant Society (DNPS) was organized in March of 1998 when 15 people attended an organizational meeting at Woodland Beach Wildlife Area. From this small, humble beginning, we have grown to an organization of more than 130 members. These members and friends of the society are able to participate in regular meetings with exciting guest speakers, attend field trips to explore Delaware's native flora, contribute to our growing native plant nursery and several “direct-seeding” reforestation initiatives at Prime Hook State Wildlife Area, Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Cedar Creek Natural Area, and Blackbird Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve. In 2003, members and friends planted more than 28,000 nuts of native tree species in 34 acres. Members have also contributed to the writing of a booklet on planting with Delaware native plants. The Society was established because of the belief that there was a need for such a society in Delaware. A society whose main purpose was to promote the use of native plants in the landscape and to serve as a vehicle to address native plant conservation issues. It was also felt that an organization such as this would be great to allow for people with similar interests to get together and share their passions for native plants, or plants in general.

The Delaware Native Plant Society is open to everyone ranging from the novice gardener to the expert botanist. One of the primary goals of the society is to involve as many individuals as possible.
