Koos van der Lende is one of South Africa’s leading landscape photographers, specialising in large format panoramic photography. His portfolio of some 350 photographs, built up painstakingly over seven years, is testimony to his formidable artistic talent – he quite literally paints with light. After studying at the School of Photography in The Hague, Van der Lende returned to South Africa and began putting his talent to work to bring us not only the vibrant colours and textures of the African veld, but also a fresh experience of this theme.
A great sense of faith characterises Van der Lende’s personality – faith that his instincts are true, faith that tomorrow will be better when an overcast sky means postponing a shoot, and faith that when he returns to civilisation with numerous rolls of film, the developed landscape photography will be as he visualised them all those weeks before. He is above all humble, and grateful that the Lord has given him the ability through his landscape photography to show people “glimpses of Heaven” (as he puts it). Connoisseurs and scientists alike appreciate his work – the beauty of his photographs has been said to give people ‘goose bumps’, while geologists comment that his landscape photography shows clearly the effects of the geomorphological forces that have been at work.
