Title

D. Brent Miller, Writer - Photographer

Description

Today, D Brent Miller serves others with his photography and communication skills. And, as time permits, writes about and photographs rural issues. Since the 2002 season, he has been the official photographer for the South Bend Silver Hawks, a minor league team of the Arizona Diamondbacks. His photographic project, The Last Days of the Oliver Plow Works, was exhibited at the Northern Indiana Center for History, South Bend, Indiana, in the summer of 2003. He recently illustrated a book for the National Rural Health Association, as he and author Tom Rowley traveled the nation. The book, Hope in the Face of Challenge: Innovations in Rural Health Care, was published in the fall, 2004.

Born in a small town, and raised in central Illinois, Brent attended high school in Pekin, Illinois, graduating in 1968. After military service in 1970-71, employment included telephone company operations, 12 years of insurance business experience, and eight years as a church youth leader before deciding to return to college full time at the age of 35.

A part-time position as a rural church pastor allowed him to return to college and grad school. It also set the tone for studying rural issues and began the process of building his body of work in small towns and rural life. While studying communication and journalism at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, and simultaneously taking a class in rural ministry at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, he wrote his first article for The Lutheran, the magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, while attending a rural ministry conference in Dubuque, Iowa. That article set the direction for Brent's future when he learned that the readership was estimated at 1.5 million, while the average Sunday attendance of the United Methodist church he pastored was 35. Reaching readers addressing rural issues became a mission.
