Description

Arthur Short Bull is an artist who strives to capture the spirit of his Oglala Lakota heritage in his work. As a watercolorist he achieves this in a quietly understated and haunting style.

Being raised in a traditional family on the Pine Ridge reservation gives Short Bull special insight into the history, culture and spirituality of the Lakotas. Arthur grew up among the White Clay District’s traditionalists of Crazy Horse’s band of warriors and spiritual leaders. Arthur’s great-grandfather was Grant Short Bull, brother of He Dog, and uncle to Amos Bad Heart Bull. On his mother’s side, he is descended from Young Man Afraid of His Horses and Between Lodges.

Long recognized for an ongoing series on Wounded Knee and images of the Ghost Dance, Arthur presents new work on this theme as well as images inspired by the Siouan mystery clan societies and shamans. Short Bull’s new work is presented here on another ongoing theme, “Wind Women,” with the ethereal images of these women in traditional Lakota “Star Quilt” blankets.
