- David Onderdonk was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1954. He began playing the guitar at the age of eight. His early interests were in bluegrass and rock music but his serious study of guitar started in 1974 when he was accepted into the classical guitar program at the University of Illinois in Urbana. In addition to his classical studies he also played in the University of Illinois Jazz Band under John Garvey.
