The story is told through the eyes of Ella, a young girl in the 1930s whose father has just been named the lighthouse keeper of Esopus Meadows Lighthouse on the Hudson River. Dana Ferry is an artist and para-educator working in special education at Propel Charter Schools in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While at home for twelve years raising her children, Dana Ferry became very interested in writing and illustrating a children's book. Because of her love of history she decided to write a historical fiction children's book.
