Cumbrian Rustic is a family business working out of an 18th century farmhouse and workshops at Torver in the heart of the Lake District. Set in a beautiful wooded valley about a mile west of Coniston Water, the house is a little bit of old England in this mad, modern world. Our aim is to reflect, in the quality of our products, a little of the richness and traditions of an England almost forgotten.
So, what do you get when you reach the wrong side of 50? Thinning hair, specs for all occasions, young people offering you a seat and piles of junk-mail from Saga. (sorry I mentioned piles) But there's an up-side too. For me it's a healthy contempt for politicians, not having to care about fashion trends and the knowledge gained through thirty years spent working with wood. From house carpentry through boat building to garden & patio furniture and this business I have discovered that the true secret of producing quality goods is simply to enjoy the work. And I love it!
We use carefully selected local timber (larch & spruce) cut from sustainable forests - seasoned and prepared at the workshop. The wood is treated and monitored constantly during the drying process to ensure that only the very best reaches the workbench. Substandard timber feeds the winter fires. Each item of furniture is individually hand-made, applying modern techniques to traditional designs and using the natural shape of the timber to give each product its own special character. With every piece of wood sanded smooth before fitting, galvanised nails and screws used throughout and each finished product drench-sprayed with a solvent based preservative, we offer the best rustic garden furniture money can buy.
