History
Cultured Stone® products were created in 1962 by the entrepreneurial spirit of brothers Garrett and Floyd Brown of Vallejo, California. Their work as plasterers helped them identify a need for a new kind of building material, manufactured stone veneer. The veneers were exacting replicas of natural stones used for building, cast in flexible molds of the stone and hand colored with iron oxide pigments. Because they were made of lightweight aggregate materials, the veneers were approximately one-quarter of the weight of full-thickness stone and could be adhered to most wall surfaces.
The company began as a small, regional operation selling to dealers in Northern California. In the early years, the number of stone textures was limited, but the company grew as it added new products with broader geographic appeal.
The company identified market trends, and developed and diligently marketed products to meet these needs. As the category gained acceptance, Cultured Stone® products were distributed throughout the United States and Canada. This lead to increased sales and confirmed the position of Cultured Stone® products as the undisputed brand leader in the manufactured stone products industry.
