Description

About Cudahy Tanning

Founder William B. Law Jr. from Lynnfield, Massachusetts attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 1918 to begin training for his future in the leather industry. After gaining much valuable experience in several domestic U.S. tanneries he founded Law Tanning Company in 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This tannery is currently operating as a very successful split tannery near its original location.

The building for Cudahy Tanning Company was purchased in 1942 where leather was tanned for army boots and gloves for World War II.

William L. Law entered the business upon discharge from the service in 1946 and shortly thereafter took over management and founded the Cudahy operation. In spite of the low wage foreign competition, which saw the liquidation of 80% of the U.S. shoe and leather industries, the quality and efficiency was such that the Law and Cudahy operations both prospered and grew.
