- My work with wood from dead trees belongs to a category of art which I think of as natural art. It emphasizes form and structural integrity found in trees. I look for raw materials that have various qualities important to the aesthetic I hope to bring to my work. Woodworkers speak of the "figure" of wood, a term which encompasses grain, burling, coloration, dimpling, pigment and a host of other qualities. Woodworkers tend to reveal these features by how they cut wood. I look for the figure in wood from a three dimensional perspective. My pieces range in size from miniature to massive, yet the process of working them is the same. As for finishes, some of my works are left completely natural. On others I may use linseed oil or beeswax or a combination of the two. I avoid varnishes and bright finishes. Sometimes, depending on the wood, my pieces do not reveal the hand of the artist, as it were. Other works are highly chiselled.
