Description
Brandon Hayes, an alumnus of Sacramento State, competed for the hornets while earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Brandon was a member of the 1998 Varsity Men's 4 that went undefeated in our conference, winning gold in both the California State Championships, and WIRA. After college, Brandon began a successful career as a Production Engineer for an aerospace company. In fall 2003, Brandon began coaching the Sacramento State Novice Men. After 2 seasons as the Novice Coach for the Hornets, Brandon accepted the Head Coaching position, leaving the lucrative cubical life for the fresh air and sunshine. In addtion to coaching, Brandon also runs his own business as a freelance software developer and consultant.
While attending Sacramento State, Mike was a coxswain on the team, worked as a writer and editor for the State Hornet, and held a menial job to pay the bills. Named most outstanding member of the team as the top novice coxswain in 2004, Mike won numerous races and brought out the competitive fire in all of his crews. After graduating with a bachelor’s in journalism, Mike coxed for the prestigious Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia and worked as an assistant coach for Capital Crew. Today, Mike coaches the Men’s Novice team in the morning and works off the water as a public relations writer for the Grant Joint Union High School District.
Jason (‘Ferg’) enrolled in the military at age 17. He served seven years in the United States Navy. He has been awarded the Navy Achievement Medal from the U.S. Navy, and a medal from the Jordanian government, for saving a Jordanian soldiers life. Jason graduated with honors from Sacramento State with a BS in Criminal Justice and was also a member of the Sacramento State Rowing Team. Jason is a big brother through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento. In the summer of 2005 Jason rode his bikes from San Francisco to New York City to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento.
