Title

Cranberry Explorer Unit - Scout Explorer Unit in Canterbury, Kent, UK

Description

2004 was our first year as an explorer unit, and we started with just 4 scouts moving up, and 1 scout leader moving up as well. We still have close links to our scout group, including going to the 2004 Essex International Jamboree together, as well as helping out with Christmas events and welcoming scouts into the unit. We do not have any great wealth of facilities (like a scout hut, or even our own tents yet) but we are starting to get ourselves organised and moving things forward.

In the summer of 2004, we attended the week-long international jamboree in Essex, and had a fantastic time. Despite showing off our inability to put up tents and plan our site effectively, we soon settled in to a very relaxed way of life, coached by our leader who served as a great example for how to be chilled when the world around him is frantic. While there, we met loads of new friends, and experienced scouting like never before. Many an evening was spent just chatting with other scouts and leaders from around the world, and in particular the explorers from the Merlin unit in Fareham.

Returning from the summer holidays, we've had a couple of the local guides join our group, as well as new people to scouting. We have started to get out more, including a day-long hike which didn't follow the route to the letter, so involved us tracking our steps back to get home, and are regularly found in a wooded area near the village where we've been able to play wide games, and get some practise of the basics of scouting in too.
