Oftentimes a semi-knowledgeable user who was hired to do a much different role than IT administrator shows a bit of technical savvy and winds up being the “administrator by default”. This is frustrating for that individual and ineffective for the business. This person’s lack of training and ability make for considerable downtime and slow response to issue resolution. The company does the best it can with its own resources and calls in an outside professional when things get overwhelming. The outside help comes at a cost that falls outside the normal budget and, therefore is always a “last resort”. This makes for a bit of a cobbled unplanned system that breeds an ugly cycle.
A business has one, maybe even two people in IT staff positions. But these positions are hard to fill and the individuals in these positions typically use the job as little more than a training ground to help find their next job. The organization often finds itself having to rehire, and retrain. This is expensive and costs the company in many more ways than just payroll expense. The company gets by, hoping that new employees can ramp up quickly and hoping that the next new hire will stay for a while.
