Preface
In the winter of 1994, after witnessing the steady downward spiral of my daughter into the hell of drug addiction, I was given the gift of raising my miraculously, magickally healthy grand-daughter. I immediately asked my beloved aunt, Laura to move into our home. My aunt was a wonderful woman. She devoted her life to her family. Auntie Laura was, in many ways, my mom. She helped raise me and then helped me immensely in the raising of my two children after an abusive marriage. I have two adult children, my much-missed daughter, who is hopefully, in recovery and my beloved son, who is in the military. Brianna was twenty-six months old when Auntie moved in with us on Martin Luther Kings birthday in January of 1995. All was well. I was working, making decent money and able to spend lots of time with Auntie Laura and Brianna. The three of us were healing after the horror that we had been through. Auntie Laura and Brianna became so very close, they were always together! Auntie would sit for hours reading Doctor Seuss and other favorites. I'll never forget Brianna’s third birthday, it was a beautiful autumn day, Brianna & I were out doing chores.....suddenly, I felt an overwhelming urge to get back home. Auntie Laura was on the floor by the front door, her hands on the foot of her mom's marble top table. Auntie Laura was in a diabetic coma. We lost her a week later. The week after that, another aunt, Mamie, the matriarch of our family passed. That was two weeks before Christmas. I did what any half sane, traumatized, retired roadie, semi-sales person, sometime concert promoter with no money would do. I sold my car and jumped on a plane. Brianna and I went to Disney World for Christmas.
There are no accidents.
We had a wonderful time at Disney World. We were there for three nights/four days. It was well worth selling the car.
As many people do after Christmas, people were passing things on. Angel, a long time confidant bought herself a new computer, so we received her old one. Freddy the Caterer had four brand new American Indian southwestern/falsa blankets. He dropped those off with some of his 'greatest meatballs'. I had a toddler, a stroller and four blankets and a bunch of meatballs. We ate the meatballs and we wrapped those blankets in plastic, put them on the stroller and Brianna & I set out to sell those blankets. There was snow everywhere as we walked the mile or so to Simone's Service Station in Providence. Louie bought two blankets and a couple of the guys that hang there bought the other two. Brianna & I had $70.00. Did I mention that we were on welfare at that point? Well, it took us awhile, but we found out where those blankets came from and we saved a few cents here and there, sold a couple of things, and we raised the $200.00 necessary for a minimum order. Coyote's Corner was born.
