Description

The landscapes considered most valuable in England and Wales are designated as National Parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There are 41 such designated areas in England and Wales. These landscapes are protected and managed by law to maintain their special character for now, and for future generations.

The purpose of designation as an AONB is to conserve the natural beauty (which includes wildlife and cultural heritage as well as scenery) of the area. The designation gives a formal recognition to an area’s national importance and helps to protect the unique characteristics of the countryside and allows for the development of communities and economic activity in ways that enhance the character of the AONB.

The designation reflects the need for integrated action to conserve the landscape through sustainable forms of environmental, social and economic development.
