beth morgan’s myeloma blog

Description

I started this blog soon after I learned I had a kind of cancer called multiple myeloma. I was 41 years old at the time. I wasn’t feeling well, and was trying to find out why. I went to a few different doctors, who couldn’t seem to find anything wrong with me. In January of 2003, I finally found a doctor who did the right blood test. He discovered that my total proteins were high, and sought further tests to determine the cause. What he found out was that my IgA was quite elevated. He referred me to a local oncologist who immediately sent me to Duke for a consult with another heme/onc. The Duke experience was not good, so I went to Dana-Farber in Boston. From there, I ended up at UNC Chapel Hill, and am now at Wake Forest. I’ve seen a few of the world’s best known MM experts, and am confident I am on the right path for my treatment.

Between then and now, there’s a lot to fill in. That’s the blog, folks. I won’t duplicate it here. I’m lucky so far that I have not had an aggressive disease. I haven’t treated it aggressively either. There are many reasons for that. I can imagine that one day I will have to do something like a stem cell transplant if I want to continue living, but my decision has been to consider that later, after all the other options have been exhausted. There is no known cure for MM, but new drugs are in development. We hope that one day MM will be cured, but we are also accepting of the fact that it may have to be treated as a chronic condition.
