This deck is constructed of 2 X 10 joists and 5 ½” deck boards, all supported by 8 inch Northern Pine milled logs. The post tops became water saturated, primarily through the exposed end grain, and rotted. The birds and squirrels found these horizontal surfaces perfect for feeding and pooping. The posts needed to be replaced. After the expense of buying the posts and the incredible amount of labor required To cut, fit, sand and stain, I NEEDED PROTECTION FOR THE NEW POSTS.
