Description

riginally a 16th Century working water mill, Coombe Mill is now a beautiful, private hamlet of picturesque cottages and riverside lodges set amidst an idyllic 30-acre estate. St Breward dates back to pre-Norman times when it was a series of small hamlets suspended along the western edge of Bodmin Moor. Over the centuries these hamlets have joined together to form the present village, which is the highest in Cornwall and enjoys magnificent views over the surrounding Cornish countryside.

The River Camel has its source on the northern edges of the moor, and then winds its way through the beautiful woodland of which Coombe Mill forms part. It is a river of many moods. In the spring and summer months it tumbles lazily over the rocks to form rapids and pools where the sea trout rest on their way to the breeding grounds to the north. In the autumn and winter months it rushes along concealing magnificent salmon in its mysterious waters. Kingfishers, dippers and goldcrest nest in the banks and exposed tree roots provide shelter for mink and the occasional otter.

Our estate, which stretches over 30 acres, spreads across both sides of the river. Ancient footpaths extend on through the valley and up to nearby moorland. The scenery is magnificent and varied and the estate is home to an unrivalled assortment of wildlife. The whole valley is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and an Area of Special Scientific Interest, because of the unique habitat it offers to so many rare butterflies, moths, birds and plants and most important, otters.
