ConsensusPolling:When NOT to use it

Note: This article is being worked on. Some of the points stated hereunder might not be correct; more thought and time needs to be put into it. Please feel free to improve this article.

Consensus polling, though a very effective process for consensus building, is not appropriate for certain situations. We have already seen the challenges faced by other decision-making processes, but in some situations they can be more effective than consensus polling. As a rule of thumb, the use of consensus polling should be avoided in the following situations:

  • Black and White situations: When choice exists only between option A and B. (Voting is more appropriate for these situations)
  • When many decisions need to be made in a very short time span. (Top-Down Decision-Making might be more applicable in this case)
  • When very few people need to reach a decision. (Face to Face Consensus would be more efficient)
