About Us
Our small hobby Kennel is fairly new, established in 1995, by Heather Macdonald and David Greer, through our love of GSD's and our eagerness to become involved in showing. The name 'Conbhairean' which is pronounced 'Conavaren' is Gaelic for 'keeper of the hounds' and is also one of the famous Munro's. As both of us were once keen hillwalkers, this name seemed very fitting. It is also very amusing listening to people try and pronounce it. This affix was granted to us in 1999. Well, it all started when we took on a lovely black and gold GSD named 'Buck' a retired Police dog from Lothian and Borders Police in Edinburgh. He was only 4 ½ when we took him home, unfortunately with lots of health problems, namely an Auto-Immune disease which caused sores all over his body at times. These sores required constant care and medication but he was most definitely worth it. You can see and find out all about our beloved 'Buck' on the memories page. When we lost him, we lost a huge part of ourselves. By 1998, we had listened to others, so after much thought regarding the bloodlines and type we wanted, we purchased a puppy, namely Mascani Holly at Conbhairean (Ziggy), this was to be our first really successful show bitch. Ziggy has won at numerous Champ and Open shows and when not first is usually there or there about. Although now semi-retired from the ring she has numerous Champ Show Wins, Best Bitches and BOB's to her name. She is very predominant of the excellent type, with sound character which we wanted to firmly establish in our small kennel and she is very much the foundation of what we have today… Since Ziggy we have bred or purchased several quality animals, including Champion Conbhairean Alexis, Sch 1, KKL 1, A-Stamp & DNA, and Ginger von der Maleiche, Sch 1, KKL 1, A-Stamp & DNA gpr, V12 at the BSZS in Germany 2003. We have also used several Top Males in Germany, including the outstanding World Sieger Ursus von Batu, which gave us Cougar, Connie & Cindi. Karat's Yoker, which gave us Erin, she is a real wild thing!!! (owned by Sharon Mitchell & John Fraser) Uno von Trompetersprung, which gave us Happy (owned by Jim MacMillan) and more recently VA Nando v Gollerweiher, which gave us Louis, Linzi & Leska. All of these animals are of the excellent type and character we strive to produce. We see our future as very much coming from a combination of our own and German blood lines, hopefully allowing us to achieve our ambition of competing succesfully both here in the UK and in Germany, something we have already achieved with Alexis, Ginger & Erin, but hope to build upon for the future of both us our partners and our dogs! All of our dogs are part of their family and spend most of their day lying around the house or garden. Most of our dogs are being campaigned either by us or by our close friends and partners and all doing well. They love showing and love the atmosphere of a show. At 'Conbhairean' we only have about 1 litter per year and our main objective is to breed healthy, happy puppies that will mature into healthy, happy adults of sound mind and body. If, in that process we continue to be lucky enough to breed something worthy of the show ring for oursleves or our friends, then even better. As ultimately that is why we do it. Unfortunately, due to a reecent house move we will not be breeding in the foreseeable future.
