Colleton County SC | Welcome
Description
Our logo is a representation of a rice trunk. Rice trunks are the “valves” that control water flow into, through, and out of the many former
rice fields of Colleton County. These “valves” are made of wood and weigh thousands of pounds. The design has remained largely unchanged since the late 18th century. Quarter drains, monstrous cypress stumps, and other tell-tale signs of rice cultivation make the former rice fields historically significant.
Today rice trunks are the primary means of controlling the former rice fields which are now wildlife-rich. In addition to waterfowl, the area is also home to alligators, otters, bald eagles and many other species.
