Coldstream Fly Tying Furniture is a small shop run by Derek Fraser. Located in Coldstream, Nova Scotia, Canada Derek has been making custom house and fly tying furniture since 1992 and fine fly tying furniture since 1994. Canadian Workshop Magazine featured one of Derek's fly tying benches on the cover of its Feb, 1995 issue. In August 2004 we were taped for an episode of HGTV's Designer's Challenge which aired Sept 8, 2005 and showcased one of our 10 drawer curly maple fly tying desks. Our Furniture: Our fly tying furniture has evolved over the years as a result of tying flies on it ourselves and from custom orders from other fly tiers. We now offer a wide range of sizes to suit any level of fly tying. In designing our desks we've put function first and aesthetics and symmetry next. Our goal is to provide a comfortable, functional piece of furniture for tying flies that truly is welcome in any room of the house. Our desks are constructed completely of hardwood and are designed for superior strength and longevity. (The only use of plywood is in our drawer bottoms and then we offer solid wood panels if you prefer.)
Our Wood: Our walnut and cherry is purchased from a local dealer from Pennsylvania. Our maple, birch and oak come from Nova Scotia woodlands. We purchase logs that we cut, grade and dry on site. We also buy select cut boards from local portable mill operators and land owners which we dry on site. Every board after drying is graded again for suitability before being used in any piece of furniture. We believe that complete control of the entire process from log to furniture is paramount to making a superior product. Every piece of furniture that leaves our shop is of heirloom quality, truly built to last a life time.
