Coastguard Whakatane was recently awarded "Eastern Region Unit of the Year" for its outstanding performance as a Search and Rescue unit.
Affiliated to Coastguard New Zealand , Eastern Region supports and assists coastguard affiliates on the North Island East Coast with Training, Education, Fund Raising and Sponsorship.
For operational purposes, Eastern Region consists of five clusters extending from the northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsular to the Southern tip of Hawkes Bay :
