Cowbridge Male Voice Choir - Cor Meibion Y Bontfaen

Description

The Town of Cowbridge

Cowbridge is a market town just twelve miles west of Cardiff situated in that attractive part of South Wales called "The Vale of Glamorgan", a region of fertile agricultural land very different from the harsh industrial valleys that surround it to the north, where 150 years ago the Industrial Revolution boomed and made the region world-famous for its exports of coal, iron and steel. The members of the choir are drawn from a radius of some ten miles around the town.

It is a region steeped in history. Its southern coastline, with its long succession of towering limestone cliffs often two hundred feet high and frequently crowned with pre-Roman earth-works, fascinates historians and visitors alike. The town of Cowbridge is the ancient administrative and commercial centre of the Vale and boasts Roman, Norman, Renaissance and Georgian remains in addition to a fine Iran Age hill-fort. Part of the medieval town wall still stands with one of it's four massive stone gateways still intact. One of Wales's oldest Grammar Schools was here and to Cowbridge came in 1770 the first printing press in all Glamorgan.

Today the one long main street sports many a fine eighteenth century facade. The weekly sheep and cattle market still flourishes but Cowbridge is now largely a commuter town serving Cardiff and the industrial valleys. It is a delightful place in which to live, alive with a multiplicity of sporting and leisure activities.
