Description
Vertical Stronghold was started on a rainy Sunday afternoon just after the end of the last ice age. Noticing that the ice had ruined most of the good climbing areas in what is now know as "Wisconsin," Paul Kuenn looked for some place to climb that was not so dependent on the weather. At first, hollowed out trees and abandoned farm silos provided some challenges. However, Paul soon tired of these places because of the frequent attacks by bears and wild cows.
Kuenn and his wife, Jude, were always fond of apples so when they saw the name "Appleton" on a map they knew they had found a place where they could build a truly "awesome" climbing center. With the help of a few friends and a large supply of 2x10s, 30,000 sheets of plywood and 1,000,000 t-nuts, Paul started to build his dream.
Thus it was that on that rainy Sunday Vertical Stronghold opened its doors for the first time. As luck would have it, the first visitors were a pair of little old men who were just seeking shelter from the rain. This might have been a setback for some people, but Paul taught the little old men how to climb and they became his first guides.
