Title
CLECOM | Selly Oak| Birmingham | 0121 471 4199
Description
Formed in 1980, Cle.Com (pronounced Clee-com) was probably the first ‘.com’ company in the world. Two Birmingham University lecturers, Dr Alan Clementson and Mr Tony Clewett, together with their families, set up the company to develop and distribute software in the management sciences.
The company's first project was the development and international marketing of a software system known as ECSL, a discrete event simulation program for industrial plants, ports and warehouses. In 1983 Cle.com was asked to develop the first microcomputer version of the popular statistical package MINITAB and this later led to the company’s appointment as the UK distributor of Minitab Inc. Over the next decade this relationship grew and the company became Minitab's sole distributor in large parts of Europe. This only ended in 1995 when Minitab opened its own European subsidiary.
In 1989, only a few short years before .com companies became the fashion, Cle.Com gave up the unequal task of trying to explain to people how to pronounce the name and began to trade as plain Clecom, completing the process in 1995 with the registration of CLECOM Software Ltd. In 1991 the range of products being distributed broadened to include the technical graphics package Axum and the computer algebra systems Maple V and Mathematica.
