Clarkston Community Historical Society- CCHS

Description

In 1830, the first pioneer settler moved from New York to what would become first Independence Township and later the Village of Clarkston. This man, Linus Jacox, and those who soon followed him, left their mark on our community. Their names grace our streets, our buildings, and even the village itself, named for brothers Nelson and Jeremiah Clark in 1842. These early residents left us a wonderful town, filled with the homes and buildings they built over a hundred years ago.

About 30 years ago, the Village of Clarkston, along with its historic buildings and homes, was almost lost. The State of Michigan intended to widen Main Street to at least 4 lanes, a plan that would have caused many of the homes and businesses to be moved or torn down. A group of concerned citizens stopped the construction. They worked to add Clarkston to the National Register of Historic Places, thus preserving it for all of us. That original group of citizens eventually became the Clarkston Community Historical Society.

The Clarkston Community Historical Society has been created in order to bring together those people interested in the history of our community and area; and, as far as possible, to collect and/or preserve such things that are of historic interest. Our goal is to provide educational opportunities for the community, not only through our collection of historic books, papers and artifacts showcased in our Clarkston Heritage Museum, but through speeches, programs, tours of historic sites, and other similar activities.
