Description
Background Info on Communities In Schools of Charleston
Hundreds of thousands of American children leave school each year. For most, academic failure is a symptom, not a cause. Bad grades and poor attendance are often the final, visible results of problems that have gone unaddressed for years. In Charleston the statistics are alarming! Based on Measuring for Success 2001, produced by the Community Benchmarking Collaborative, there is a 44% decline in enrollment from grade nine to grade twelve in the tri-county area.
Meanwhile, the surrounding community - including the school - wants urgently to help these young people. City and county agencies, local philanthropic foundations, public-spirited corporations, mentoring and tutoring programs, volunteer groups and concerned citizens are just a few of the resources available. Communities In Schools helps to bring together the hands in need with hands that can help.
Communities In Schools of the Charleston Area, Inc., formerly known as Cities in Schools (CIS) was established in 1989, following a study by the Johns Hopkins University, which advised the Charleston County School District to implement dropout prevention programs. The advice was given on the basis of Charleston County's high dropout rate, which was approximately 30% with the minority dropout rate even higher.
