Description
I'm Cindy Merritt. I was born Gabriele Groeschel in 1956 in post-war West Germany in a beautiful little town named Bad Kissingen. We moved a lot when I was young, almost every year until I was 13, settling finally in Lake Charles, LA.
I graduated from Sulphur High School in 1975 and married Steve Merritt that same year. We were married 7 years and had one son, Christopher. I credit Steves' mom with my first exposure to painting. Dorothy Merritt was a prize-winning tole painter and her work amazed me, so much that I took a still-life class at a local art store. The class lasted 6 weeks and I created a painting of a bowl of fruit. That was my introduction and sole instruction in the art of oil painting.
After divorce, Chris and I moved to New Orleans where life as a single mom was hectic but wonderful. I painted little during these years but the creativity in the city soaked in and opened my eyes in every way! David, a really hot rock drummer, was also a New Orleans cab driver when we met. We had 2 more sons, Quinn & Chase. With his older two that made 5 boys! Though not all always all with us, it was when the babies 2 & 3 that I decided I must start spending my time at home with them and, at the same time, get serious about my painting! I'd cut pictures from magazines and spent days, weeks, months trying to recreate photographs I was working from. A lot of trial and (mostly)error finally taught me how to capture much of the images I saw. I have a saying these days: God painted it all, I'm just doing my best to copy it!
