Title

Chickamauga Presbyterian Church

Description

Located in what we affectionately call "The Scenic Center of the South", Chickamauga, or perhaps lesser known by it's Cherokee Indian name Tsikamagi was, prior to 1888, a large southern plantation. The postal address was Crawfish Springs, named for Indian Chief Crayfish. In 1892, the City of Chickamauga was incorporated with a radius of three quarters of a mile from Crawfish Springs which was the "town center".

Today, Chickamauga has a population of approximately 2500. Many of the old mansions have been restored as have many of the buildings along the main thoroughfare. It is easy to identify many of these buildings in photos taken in the 1930's, The railroad depot has been completely refurbished and is the site for the Regional History Museum which displays artifacts covering the entire spectrum of Chickamauga's existence. The city has an inordinate number of churches, a highly respected school system, warm and friendly people. Chickamauga, located a few miles south of Chattanooga, TN and 120 miles north of Atlanta,GA, is comfortably cradled amongst the rolling hills of the southern part of the Appalachian Mountain chain in northwest Georgia. Chickamauga has been called "one of the best kept secrets in the south".

North of our fair city and along U.S. Highway 27 is the oldest and largest U.S. National Military Park. This park commemorates the battle fought on the 19th and 20th of September 1863 between Confederate and Union forces struggling for possession of nearby Chattanooga, a major railway center strategically located on the Tennessee River. The Battle at Chickamauga was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, with Confederate losses totaling more than 18,000 out of 66,000 and Union losses totaling 16,000 out of 58,000. Within the boundaries of the Park are countless monuments, hiking trails and a world class museum and visitor's center. Chickamauga, a word taken from the ancient Cherokee meaning "River of Death," is an appropriate name for this almost uncontrolled clash of two great, groping armies.
