The Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society is one of the nation's largest and most active organizations devoted to the study of a single railroad. It has one of the largest archives of technological data of any single railroad in existence. The data consists of more than 200,000 civil engineering drawings (1870s-1960s), 60,000 mechanical drawings of locomotives and cars (mainly 1920s -1970s), over 200,000 photographic images, 5,000 books, pamphlets and publications, and several thousand linear feet of general reference materials pertaining to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, Pere Marquette Railway, Hocking Valley Railway and their predecessors, including the corporate minute books for 136 predecessor lines. C&OHS sells a wide variety of books, videos, curios, and reproductions pertaining to Chessie and the C&O. The net income from these sales goes toward the preservation of the collections and other Society preservation projects. Sales of reproductions also support the preservation projects.
