ABOUT US
Chateau Bizarre is a collaboration between writer Lilah Wild and artist/programmer Stray Tenebrae. Conceived in the winter of 1999, and finally launched in the summer of 2001 (and remembering to turn on the hit counter in October 2002), the Chateau aims to bring attention to smaller merchants and independent designers, while providing our readers with the latest finds in tantalizing fashion and exotic amusements.
We loathe how big-box stores and strip malls are drowning every city in the same old corporate logos, giving incredibly diverse places a depressing, ugly sameness. And while glossy fashion magazines can be fun for ideas, we don’t like the “must-have” mentality that makes readers feel like true style can only be achieved by dropping half a grand on a rich-bitch designer handbag. Talent can surface in the most surprising places, and it’s not always in the established design houses. Our portal ranges from established high-end fetish labels to teenage enterprises kicking out backpacks in an attic studio. All are welcome.
You could say this site really began in the late 80’s, when a 12-year-old Lilah started sending away for rockertrash mail-order catalogs advertised in Circus and Hit Parader, back when you could only pay by money order. (You have no idea how grateful we are for online ordering.) Today, Chateau Bizarre’s closets reveal a combined fondness for Octopus pants, lace mitts, bowler hats, pixie skirts, tanker boots, hot pants, tux jackets, baby tees, skull bandannas, bondage flares, chain belts, and lots of torn fishnet.
