Description

Shelbyville, Indiana

In the fall of 1999 my lovely wife, a New Orleans native, moved north to start a new life with an Indiana native. The following spring she set out to beautify our yard. A few clumps of Stella de Oro, Pandoras Box and Little Creppete started us on the road to Daylily madness. In 2001 we discovered Cedarthorn Gardens where we purchased 2 of Louise's seedlings at the open garden. A few days later Charmaine discovered Daylilies at a house just down the road from us. A short afternoon walk, a conversation with a very nice gentleman and a couple weeks of work in the evenings weeding and cleaning up his garden and our small collection was increased by about 2 dozen. From this humble start a monster was born.

I always had a love of growing things, something I guess I inherited from my father. Dad was always growing something but I don't recall him ever having Daylilies. The more info I found the more interesting it got. It has never been enough for me to just buy something someone else made, I always had to learn how to do it myself. Here was a chance to create something unique and that was all it took. We began crossing every flower just to see if we could produce seeds. We even managed to get several pods that first season. Used a couple of germination methods I found on the Internet with very poor germination rates.

Our hobby garden located in central Indiana has seen many more additions since that day we now have over 100 cultivars or unique seedlings. Our first seedlings bloomed in 2003, and despite having no real direction that first season and a terrible germination percentage we did manage to come up with a winner. Checking the seedling bed each morning before leaving for work was exciting, I am really looking foward to next season. We selected 5 of these first seedlings to keep for at least another season, Charmaine thinks I am ruthless when it comes to the seedlings. She wanted to keep all of them but with limited space and her insistance that we keep some grass in the yard we will have to be very selective. Only the very best of the seedlings we produce will get to stay in the garden. The one thing I will insist on for any flower we keep is a decent bud count, I want to see flowers not greenery. We also ended the year by selling some of the seeds we produced, this should help offset the expense of adding to our collection.
