Description

The 70's were also the time of the Sunbury Pop Festivals running from 1972 - 1975 held on Australia Day weekend. These became an annual event for me and my friends. I have revisited these festivals in the last 10 years by collecting records and memorabilia from them. Originally starting with Australian only bands, in 1974 they got Queen to play. They promptly got booed offstage as this was Billy Thorpe territory and people came to hear the King Of The Hill. Billy had reinvented himself and was now a long haired, denim clad, make your ears bleed full on hard blues rocker. 1975 saw Deep Purple imported and their roadies promptly got into a brawl with AC/DC, Bon was always a wild boy. Rain kept the crowd down and this was the end of Sunbury.

Late 70's saw me travel from Victoria to Queensland for a holiday. All my records were stored in a shed. Well that holiday saw me stay put in Queensland where I still live today. On a visit back I checked my record collection and it was ruined. Rain had got in and all I had left was a big vinyl and cardboard mess. I salvaged The Purple Hearts EP without cover now as a reminder.

Back in Queensland the 80's were a bit of a blur. Too much partying and not looking after myself. I eventually got my act together and a friend Daryl, I had met in Mackay and started travelling about. Daryl came from Victoria as well, not far from where I came from and we hit it off from first time meeting. Daryl unfortunately has got stricken with cancer lately, I wish you all the best mate.
