Title
CGA Team USA - FIRST Robotics Team 500
Description
Our team is comprised of about forty high school students from a mix of schools in Connecticut and Rhode Island, U.S. Coast Guard Academy mechanical engineering cadets, and C.G.A. faculty. Many of us are students from local high schools who do not have our own robotic team: Grasso Southeastern Regional Technical School, Westerly High School, New London High School, Valley Regional High School, Fitch Senior High School, and Charino High School, while others are homeschooled students from Connecticut and Rhode Island.
We are a melting pot who contributes a fusion of interests and skills by bringing together a diversified group whose pursuits and studies unite and strengthen us as a team. Students in the technical school's machine drafting department have been working together on the animation project, while others contribute their intuitive mechanical skills and abilities. Several of our homeschooling members have amassed a wealth of know-how regarding computer programming, website development and database management. Some team members excel in mathematics and problem-solving skills while others of us contribute in the area of writing and photography. Though coming together from various backgrounds and locales, our group has learned to work well together as a team and is looking forward to the games ahead.
Our students and mentors work intensively during the six-week robot design and construction phase, but our team is active throughout the year for activities such as team spirit get-togethers, programming classes, and outreach projects in our local communities. We'll be meeting during the weeks before the SBPLI Long Island Regional to make signs and banners, to plan scouting and game strategies, and to decide on our team shirts, hats, and buttons for the competition. Other get-togethers will be to view the finalized animation award submission, to help critique the team website for the website award submission, and to practice driving practice using last year's robot. This FIRST experience has enabled students, who might never have met, to foster friendships with each other, to develop relationships with cadet and professional mentors, and to learn to work cooperatively together.
