About Bedford Main Street
Over a decade ago, Bedford was selected as one of the first Virginia Main Street cities. Based on a downtown revitalization concept developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Main Street Program stressed design, organization, and promotion as parts of economic restructuring. The program required building consensus and cooperation between merchants, property owners, bankers, city officials, local associations and citizens. It included marketing a positive public image through graphics, public relations, special events and retail promotions. Plans called for enhancing the physical attractiveness of Centertown; and finally, strengthening the economic base by working with existing merchants and recruiting appropriate new retailers and services.
Bedford Main Street, Inc. has provided the impetus for the revitalized central business district that we enjoy today. We have preserved historic properties, encouraged reinvestment in the community, created job opportunities and made Bedford a place of public expression and celebration.
