Description
In the Fall of 2001, UNC undergraduates Gerry Lipscomb, Ting Li, and Ryan Larson had a vision. They wanted to develop an entrepreneurship club open to the full Carolina community. There was already an MBA entrepreneurship club, but there was little in the way of programming or support for undergraduate aspiring entrepreneurs.
So together with Jeff Reid, Executive Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology Venturing and advisor Rollie Tillman, the students set out to found the Carolina Entrepreneurship Club, a club for the full Carolina community-undergraduates, graduate students, alumni, staff, and faculty. They authored a Statement of Purpose, obtained recognition from student government, and began to hold Speaker Series meetings to which they would invite successful entrepreneurs from the community to speak to the club.
In the Fall of 2002, the club continued to build on its successes. President Paul Vollman and his officer team, along with new advisors Hunter Bost and Todd Ballenger, continued to grow the club. Meetings were held primarily on North campus and attracted area entrepreneurs as speakers including Todd Weiler, Clay Thorp, Reid Conrad, Merrill Mason, and Scott Maitland. By the end of the year, the club had grown from 20 regular attendees to fifty-three dues paying members. T-shirts had been made and distributed, the club joined the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, new events such as the Legal Help Desk, Start-up Clinic, and Business Roundtable were started, and the club was formalized with an official Club Constitution, signed February 24, 2003.
