Having been born and raised in a small town outside of Naples, Italy , we grew up following our mother on her daily visits to the open-air markets where she shopped for our needs. But unlike our modern American grocery stores, the Italian markets of my childhood were a wonderful swirling mixture of sights, sounds and smells that stay with me to this day.
Vendors enthusiastically selling an abundance of the freshest fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses and baked goods manned countless booths, protected overhead by huge swooping tents. Dried meats such as salami and prosciutto hung from the tent poles while fishermen would bring in and sell their daily catches of the delicious seafood for which the Italian waters are famous. Entertainers, clowns and musicians wove in and out of the various markets performing songs and skits, and we often saw and visited with friends.
And sometimes the lure of all that delicious, fresh food became too tempting, and we would sit at a café table and just savor it all... the irresistible food, the bright music, the companionship and laughter of friends, and the sense that there, in that wonderful Italian market place, we had all that we could ever truly need.
